Safeway’s Just For U Program: What you need to know.

This week I attended an event at the Safeway Headquarters designed to form a relationship with bloggers, to get the information out about Safeway’s Coupon Policy and their new Just For U program.  I think this is a great giant leap in the right direction, this is a new area for Safeway and I couldn’t be happier that they see the need to speak to you, my readers directly.

Now this Just For U program has only *officially* launched in Hawaii, Illinois, and Northern CA – however some of the same changes will apply nationwide.  Some changes you’ll see in your local store…

Safeway no longer accepts eCoupons from cellfire.com, PGeSaver, Upromise, and  shortcuts.com.  Instead what they have done is create a very.com/prehensive Coupon Center that we will discuss in detail below.

Safeway no longer allows for the stacking of a paper coupon and an eCoupon, so it’s pretty safe to say that we’ll see fewer freebies.  However I’ll share with you below a few HOT deals I was able to find by stacking my Personalized Savings price with a Club Special and a paper manufacturer’s coupon.  So we can stack – just in a different way.

Safeway DOES allow the use of eCoupons loaded to your card through their Coupon Center on Home Delivery orders!  This is huge as it has never been done before.  Paired with this week’s $15 off $50 + FREE delivery coupon code I’m certain there are some good deals to be found.

Safeway now has Coupon Centers in their stores, full set-ups where you can load coupons to your card and print your shopping list right there before you shop!  They did say there was about a 30 minute delay before the eCoupons made it to your card, so it wouldn’t work for a dashing in and out shopping trip.

The new Safeway Coupon Center replaces the previous outside sourced eCoupons – making for a much simpler method of loading your eCoupons.  It does appear to be a very.com/prehensive collection of coupons, the only downside is that we can no longer stack our eCoupons and paper coupons.

In each ad there are about 100 featured Club Specials – these are the deals that I have available to me to do Coupon Match-Ups for you.  However what I didn’t realize is that each week there are over 2,000 club specials in the store that never make it to print, wow!  With that said as much as I’d love to be able to tell you about ALL of the club specials, I simply can’t.  What this section of the Just For U program does is highlights the Club Specials they think you would be interested in based on your purchase history.  So we’ll still have the ad to match up the loss leaders and hot buys but in addition we’ll have access to many more Club Specials without having to leave our homes – this opens a door to be able to be just that much more prepared for our shopping trips.

This is the newest feature and most likely the one that you’ll enjoy the most – Personalized Deals.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had several really great deals on my card when I registered.  Basically they track your purchases and customize deals “Just For U” based on your purchase history. What I love about these deals is that they work with Club Specials (discussed below) and you CAN use eCoupons or paper coupons with them.   If or when a Catalina promotion comes around, that would also be something you could “stack” with a Personalize Deal. Your Personalized Deal price is good for 90 days, so basically you have a very extended sale price to use as you’d like as many times as you’d like.  If by chance your Personalized Deal is higher than a store sale – the lowest price will always win out.  Here are 2 examples of my Personalized Deals on my card right now….

Quaker Instant Oatmeal – $2.44 ea (Shelf Price is $4.99)
Club Special through 11/2 – Buy 2 Get 2 Free
Use (2) $1/1 Select Quaker Oatmeals, exp. 10-31 (RP 8/29/10)
Final Price: $2.88 for 4 boxes or $0.72 ea

Oscar Mayer Bologna – $1.84 ea (Shelf Price is $3.99)
Club Special through 11/2 – Buy 1 Get 1 Free
$1/2 Oscar Mayer Lunch Meat, exp. 11-7-10 (SS 09/26/10)
Final Price: $0.84 for 2 or $0.42 ea!

So those are just a couple of deals I found this week using my Personalized Prices.  So, what’s the downside?  I don’t know what your Personalized Prices are so I won’t be able to help you in as much detail as I have been able to in the past.  The upside is that you’re going to have even more deals that are personalized just for you based on your shopping history.  I also have a hunch that since we as couponers all seem to shop in the same fashion, we’ll be seeing several of the same Personalized Deals.

Now I know we’ve all been experiencing less than stellar shopping trips lately.  I’ve tested this new program twice now, both times with excellent experiences – in my opinion this takes a lot of stress off of the cashiers.  They aren’t in the position any longer to have to deal with our issues when a cellfire or shortcuts eCoupons doesn’t come off.  Since it was an outside company, they had no way of verifying or handling those situations.

That’s the beauty of printing your Safeway Shopping List – if a Personalized Deal or eCoupon is loaded to your card and by chance doesn’t come off, the cashiers are trained to look at the list you printed and verify the product you purchased is indeed correct against your list and immediately credit you back the difference. I will say that I thought I had found an error on my shopping list when I bought Ore-Ida  Potatoes (Personalized Price of $2.26)- I purchased the Steam & Mash but it wasn’t the right product, it was meant to be on the the fries, tater tots, etc.   I brought this to corporate and they are now working to expand the description to avoid this issue.  Even still I was issued my refund right away.

I’m trying to reserve judgement until the bugs get worked out, but so far I’m not very impressed. I signed up ASAP and have yet to see anything about my free eggs. I shopped yesterday, for the sobe catalina deal, only to get home and realize there was a personalized price for me that wasn’t there earlier when I had loaded my coupons. Are we going to have to load coupons everyday just before we shop?

    • From what I understand, there will be new coupons at the most once a week. However you should only need to load your Personalized Savings once. I loaded them all at one time just to get it over with, since they are good for 90 days. My guess is maybe you loaded before the program was fully launched? You should see your free eggs in the Personalized Deals area.

      • funtobewith says:

Yes, could be the case… I do see the eggs now. I’m going back for more sobe, so hopefully it will be smoother, but I’m already dreading the sales pitch again :)

  2. FrugalDay says:

They are being very good about refunds. Make sure you really go over your receipt. I didn’t get credit for $16 in coupons and the B1G1 Mix and Match meet, another $18. Until things get settled double check what you are buying!

  3. I was wondering if you know if they changed their policy on super coupon limits. The limit was per card per day; however, the super e-coupons have a limit of 1. I can still use the paper coupons, but I want to make sure they haven’t changed it to a limit per week and are now tracking it on the card. I just don’t want a headache on a second trip. Thanks for all that you do!

  4. Don’t know where you got the price for the bologna? don’t see that on the just for you sight?

    • Katie, that was just an example of the Personalized Savings – that is MY price. In that section we will all have different personalized prices based on our purchase history. I hope that makes sense!

  5. Has a few bugs to work out – one I ran into yesterday is that staff/mgmt do not seem to know when Safeway is ceasing to process those “other” e-coupons one has so carefully already loaded onto one’s card; Asst Mgr at Clayton Station store yesterday afternoon thought they were still accepting those that had been loaded but they didn’t show up on my receipt. Line of folk behind me too long for us to “discuss” it :)

  6. I’m a little confused as to what this means for “other” states. Did they tell you if it’s “everything as normal” until we see that it’s launched in our state? I’m in AZ and haven’t seen anything written up and Cellfire is still letting me load coupons to Safeway. If you know anything, please let me know. If not I’ll just do some experimenting and see what happens. :)

  7. Julia-
Do you know anything about the personalized deals as they relate to produce? I have one for green beans ($1.68/lb) and when I purchased them, they didnt’ give me the personalized price. I emailed customer service about it and they said I didn’t get the lower price because I didn’t buy a full pound–but nowhere in the program lingo does it say I have to purchase a full pound to get the product at the lower price. Thanks!

  8. Issues with “Just for U” if you have a split family. I got my club card when they first came out. I was living with my now EX husband. He has recently moved to a town where all they have is safeway. I have updated alll my info on my club card and changes the telephone number etc. BUT safeway links the old and new numbers together FOREVER. Anyway all my loaded one time coupons and presonalized prices got wiped clean when he decided to use it. I have a call into Safeway now. will keep you posted

  9. Ugggghhhh! I am so frustrated. I don’t shop at Safeway, but because of TFF and this new coupon thing ( and a good friend who works for Safeway). I did my list and added the coupons to my club card. Long story short, NOT ONE of the coupons actually worked. So, I had to spend 20 extra minutes to go over the reciept and then go to customer service to go through the entire reciept with her. They actually have a code specifically for this reason – so if it doesn’t work, they will give you your money.(another 10.00 in my case) The catch is that you have to do all the work. Their reciepts weren’t easy to read before this…
I will call the 1 877 number to let them know, and I did complain to the manager. They seem to not like the JFU as much as everyone else. I do not know if I will continue to even shop at Safeway until they get the kinks worked out.

  10. Confused about using Personalized Price with in-ad special. I asked the manager if I would get BOGO strawberries at MY Personalized Price ($2.49) and she said “No”. She said that which ever deal is cheaper – 2 boxes at $2.49 each (my PP) OR BOGO at $4.99 for one …
Well, I thought it would be too good to be true if I got 2 for $2.49!
ALSO – After you use up a Just For U special – does it disappear from your online page?? For example, my 89 year old mother still has the “FREE EGGS” coupon on her JFU page – did she already use it or forget to use it? (I think she probably forgot to use it.)
AND – I have had to go to customer service after almost every visit to correct things related to this program. They always happily give me the money owed. Example, the second bag of salad didnt come up at 99c when I went back for more, and it was definitely still in effect and I had not met my limit of 4 bags.

  11. I’m sooo bummed. My new personalized deals came out today and many of them are the same deals I had last time, only at a higher price!! The frozen potatoes I was getting for $3.84 are now 4.24 and the pasta I was getting for $1 is now $1.50! The OJ I was getting for 1.88 is now 2.23 & the paper towel deal is up by .70 cents & the cottage cheese is up by $1!!!

I didn’t expect to find the same deals, but thought I would get some great deals on some new items. However, I am unimpressed by most of the new items they added.

  12. Wow I haven’t shopped Safeway in years. Was thinking of going back today, but after reading all these posts. I think not.

  13. I bought 2 avacados the other day$2.48 each but I had a personalized price of .99 cents and somehow they ended up having to pay me a dollar how is this possible?. I know that on top of my just 4 U price they had a clu card savings discount but I am still not understanding how this works

  14. Julia – have you seen what they have done to the Shopping List on the Safeway site today? The only way I could track optimally for me what was going on with all the special prices was to print (or e-mail) the old Shopping List right after I I had loaded the new ones on Wednesday morning.

This morning they are now calling the “shopping” list a “savings” list AND WILL ONLY PRINT THE NEW STUFF I ADDED TODAY – 2 PRINTED PAGES, STILL LOADED ON MY CARD, BUT INVISIBLE NOW, ARE 6 MORE PAGES OF ITEMS – some deals not expiring until December of this year! ! ! !

I called customer service, spoke with an agent R – - n and was told that it was a “tech decision” – and that many other people had already called this morning to complain. I complained in the customer service contact them e-mail page. I told the agent I was going to cry on your shoulder too and hopefully have your powerful (in the nicest of ways) lobby to get the old format back too. He said “DO” – they listen to the coupon folk.

So PULEASE do ask them to allow anything that is still effective and on the card to print on the list. I don’t care of course what they call the list and the new deal where one can add stuff free-form is nice but not a priority like knowing when I go in there all that could be a deal for me.

    Thanks!

I just realized this post was written in 2010, and I’m wondering if the Just4U program has been expanded to more states? I signed up thinking it was applicable to everyone, and I keep getting a message when I sign on saying that it’s not available in my area. Two years is a long time for it not to be available everywhere.

  16. I have personally been loving the new Safeway program. But I do have to say it is very important to double check your receipts. I have received about $25 back after checking my receipts due to the savings not registering. All of the staff has been very nice in checking my “savings list” and noticing that I was not given the discount and immediately issuing a refund. That being says there are some really good deals to be had on the Just 4 U program!

  17. delphine wegner says:

visited the saffeway website for the just 4 U program, before seting out to shop around 12p.m. sept. 4, 2012, arrived at the store around 6:15 p.m. to use the items I had selected on my home computer, after leaving the store realized I wasn’t given not one of any of the items I had added to my card in the morning, returned to the store and the head clerk at the store couldn’t understand why this would happen. This is not the first time it has happended the first week I had signed up for the program the very same thing happended, never went back to the atore thinking I had done something wrong, but this has made me realize this is not a good program, after all the reviews on this, not sure I will be doing much shopping at safeway in the future.

  18. Joe in Surprise says:

this program sucks. Before it was easy, you have a card you go to the store and if the item was on sale you swipe your card a checkout and boom you saved a buck.
now you have to spend 15 min. on the computer before you shop.
if you don’t and just drop in for a few things on your way home. Guess what your item is $1.00 off and you need 5 of them. You just LOST $5.00.
    totally sucks.
i think im going back to Albertson’s or Fry’s.

I go to just for u and click to coupons and all I get is a one with arrows going on opposite sides????????????????

  20. Safeway Just4U is the worst program I have ever encountered. What a waste of my time to have to go to website and load my savings. Saving Programs should be automatically be added to your card. I hope Giant builds a store near my house. I find it hard to believe that Safeway did any research on this….

  21. Once Safeway was congratulated on their Just for You Program the ability to print shopping list has gone to hell. Each time I need to go to store and spend countless HOURS on their computer to print out a list.

  22. Jeremiah says:

I’ve given up on Just for U. I don’t have a smartphone yet, so I can’t activate the little ‘just for U’ ads they hang over products in the store. I also forgot my password online, and now my account is deactivated until I take the time to call customer service… I have no idea why they need that kind of security on it. it won’t even let me reset my password. What am I supposed to gain by hacking a safeway club card anyway?

  23. I use J4U clipper app in android to add all my coupons. Its great.. I dont have to add each coupon manually.
