That’s sad to hear. I loved that place. The Oroweat outlet in Walnut Creek is good but Hostess was my favorite. Also, St Vincent on Contra Costa Blvd (my fav. thrift store because they had .50 baby clothes!) had free bread. Each time you shopped, you were welcome to take 1 or 2 items. I don’t know if they still do that (this was 2 yrs ago) but it’s something to consider!

Bake your own – it really is easy and cheap. Bread flour cost $2 for 5 lbs which will make about 6 loaves.
easy 3 loaves : 3 cups warm water, 2 pkgs yeast, 2 tsp. salt, 1 TBLS. sugar, 1 TBLS. vinegar, 6 cups bread flour (or any flour combo you like, just don’t use more than 3 cups whole wheat). Mix it up, let it sit on counter top for 2 hours, gently divide into 3 greased loaf pans, let sit for an hour in a unheated oven(middle rack) with a hot cup of water on the bottom rack for 1 hour or til doubled. Remove the cup and bake at 380 until golden – YUM! Let cool before you cut.

Also don’t know how far you want to travel, but there’s one in Richmond/San Pablo as well. I think the store is roughly the same size. It’s on 23rd Street.

The Pittsburg location is right off the freeway, too so it would probably be a quick trip if the gas math works out for you.

I don’t know ho far you want to drive but there are two locations over the hill in Pittsburg and Antioch. Pittsburg location is about 10 miles away from the Market St. location.

I’ve been driving down to the Oroweat Outlet in your neck of the woods. Got 5 whole wheat loaves for $8 and they give you a punch card to add up and get free things along the way…your deal was better I think! bummer!
