What I consider to be “Buy It Now” Prices.

by Julia on June 30, 2010
Buy It Now

I’ve been working on gathering what I consider to be a list of my “Buy it Now” price points.  This is basically the lowest price we’ll see these items at and it’s in most cases it’s also the highest price I will pay.  I practice the stock pile method of buying several weeks/months worth of an item when it’s at it’s rock bottom price so I never have to pay retail.  While also always staying within our $50 a week grocery budget.  The way we shop means that we may not have a certain item in the house for a long time, if it’s not on sale – but when I find it at my  “Buy It Now” price I’ll stock up.

Something you should know too is that most stores follow a 6 week sales cycle, every 6 weeks you’ll see that there is a selection of products at a rock bottom price.  It moves throughout the store – one week it will be the meat, another it will be the cereals, and so on.  That tells me that if my pantry is low, I might want to consider stocking up (if possible) for the next 4-6 weeks.  Only if it’s something we NEED though, you don’t want to stock up on fruit snacks just because they’re at the “Buy It Now” price.  But cereal, oatmeal, ground beef, etc would be something I’d buy extra of.

I’ve linked to several examples below of when I’ve shared with you deals that I consider to be my “Buy It Now” price, please note that these deals ARE expired – they are just for reference.  I try to share as many of my personal shopping trips as possible, you can see all the shopping trips I’ve written about so far here!

Love your website love your list. always been somewhat of a couponer but got picky with brands now Ive opened up to more brands. Do you have certain brands you love to buy and try and find them most often?

Thanks Heather and welcome to The Frugal Find :) That’s a great question! I am a self-proclaimed brand snob, but more in the sense that I like name brands – not so much that I’m stuck on a particular manufacturer’s brand.

I will give a high five to Tide, Tropicana, Skippy, Smuckers, Aveeno, Pantene, and Huggies and they are a few of my favorites that cohttp://thefrugalfind.com/wp-admin/#comments-formme to mind.

what about cooking/baking supplies? things like vegetable/olive oil, flour, sugar, breadcrumbs, spices–pantry staples?

Ah Sara great one! I’ll have to give that a bit of thought….but off the bat I will say that those types of items I buy about 1-2 times a year and usually during peak “baking season” when the prices are the lowest. Usually in late November – December.

Thanks for doing this! I often wonder when items are on ‘sale’ if it is really a sale.

I keep a price book (in excel on my computer). Nothing complicated though, so I can keep an idea of what I’d like to pay for items. But more general items, like you list above I can keep in my head. I do like to add others’ prices to my price book, however you do have to consider regions. I live in No. CA, land of no doubles, so prices may be higher than others. Here’s a taste of what I have in my price book. I need help with laundry soap and dishwasher detergent. Is your price listed for the sink or the dishwasher?

TOILETRIES
Hair styling products =same as shampoo and conditioner Free-.50
laundry soap ??? per load price
toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss = ALWAYS FREE!
Mouthwash up to .99
Dishsoap Free-.50
Dishwasher Soap ??? price per load

DAIRY
shredded cheese 2-2.25/lb. (freezes well)
cream cheese .99 or less
real butter 1.65 (at costco) to 1.99 (safeway in ad coupons) per lb.
eggs .99/dozen

PANTRY
pasta .25/box or bag
bread FREE (we make our own, bought machine for $5 at yard sale, bake in over for better crust!)
Cake Mix Free-.50
Salad Dressing Free-.50 (for higher quality brands)

PRODUCE-This is completely regional, but I think it is helpful to have your own price book for produce. For example I know that the cheapest I can find bananas is .25/lb at Costco. So and .47 at the regular grocery store. I’d never remember that if I didn’t right it down.

We have a dishwasher, but use both types for washing pots and pans in the sink too. If you click on the dishwasher link, I got Electrasol Tabs FREE! THanks for sharing our list, I’ll add some of those ideas to my price list too. I hadn’t thought about Pasta, Salad Dressing, etc…

Julia,
Is your $50/week budget for food only or food and health and beauty supplies/cleaning, etc. And then if you reach your $50/week budget and there is a GREAT sale at “Buy it now” price, will you go and pick this up even though you have spent your $50 budget.

I want to know that too! For 2 people I spend around $85 per week on a good week up to $110 on a bad one that is food and toiletries. I feel like my stockpile is never “piled” as I am constantly low on SOMETHING. I do have 4 cats though so they are part of the toiletry budget I guess. I know 4!!!! And I love this list I want something like this to print out and bring with me. I should look for ground beef cheaper I guess. I bought 5 packages at Target because they had it $1.50 and I thought that was really cheap! Thanks for all you do, Julia your blog is so cool. One of my favorites!!!

I am interested to find out how you could buy the items listed so inexpensive. I have been trying for awhile and can’t seem to save more than 47% on my food bill.

I’m curious about your “buy it now” price for canned soups? I found Progresso soups at my local Safeway for $0.99 this week, and am pretty excited (considering that they are usually $2-3 if not more!)…my hubby likes to eat them for a quick meal.

Thanks for this list! I’m just getting into couponing, and am trying to get as organized as I can before baby number 2 gets here (in September)!
