Kid Friendly Frugal Fun

Have you been looking for an affordable family acitivity?  I’d highly suggest getting a zoo membership, we’ve been members of the Oakland Zoo for at least 6 years now and love it!

You’ll need to HURRY! This deal ends at 12 midnight on 3/12/10.

Right now you can get a 1 Year Oakland Zoo Membership for ONLY $40!!  This includes 2 adults and up to 4 kids.  What a great gift this would make too!  This is a 53% savings, the regular price is $85 and the only discount I have ever seen was once they called us after our membership had expired and offered us an additional 6 months at the $85 rate – that was good but this is great! I’ve NEVER gotten a deal like this before!

If you’re ready to order, go here and let the fun begin!

You Zoo Membership doesn’t end there, check out everything that is included:

  1. Free admission, 363 days of the year, at the Oakland Zoo for the two named, cardholding adults (ages 18 and up) and any four children (ages 2-17)
  2. Free parking at The Oakland Zoo for one vehicle
  3. Free guest pass (for one-time use) for 2 adults and 2 children at The Oakland Zoo

Frugal Christmas Fun

by Julia on December 18, 2009
Bay Area Deals

One of our absolute favorite things to do as a family is go for a drive.  It’s something I did often as a child with my grandpa.  He’d take us to different places every time, never telling us in a advance where we were going.  We never went anywhere extravagant, instead we found small towns to explore.  I love those memories and it’s something I’ve carried over into my family now.

We have a few favorite towns we like to drive to on occasion, now with Christmas here we love to drive in the evening and see the Christmas lights!  I don’t know how people have the time and energy to decorate their house so beautifully, but a huge THANK YOU goes out to all of them.  It’s such a blessing to be able to drive around and tour our neighborhoods in search of Christmas displays.

Recently I got an email from a family local to me in Clayton, CA.  I’ll let him explain below more about what they’re doing.  But before I do that, just know…if you have kids interested in Toy Story this is a MUST SEE display.  My husband and I were shocked at the quality and craftsmanship on their work.  Thank you Chris for the email and the invitation!

“For the past ten or so years, we have made homemade wooden cutouts, a whole family project, and added lights to share with our.com/munity.  We are three time first place and/or grand prize winners of the Clayton Home Decorating Contest.  This year our new theme is based on the movie Toy Story. I draw the design on plywood, my dad cuts them out, then we paint and finally clear coat them. ( Each one takes approximately 5 coats of paint per color prior to completion ).  We have lights, but are using less this year than in the past in order to conserve.  We also have music playing during the display featuring Christmas songs, songs from the movie and Buzz and Woody’s voices wishing Merry Christmas to passersby.

This year we have also incorporated a toy drive to benefit the Bay Area Crisis Nursery (www.bacn.info) in Concord. We were featured on the front page of the Clayton Pioneer’s December 4 issue (www.claytonpioneer.com).

Our lights are on and cutouts are out from 5:30pm until 9:00pm each night, weather permitting.  A collection box is on our porch each day and in dry weather, there is a Santa bag at the curb as well.  Donations of new unwrapped toys for children of all ages are greatly accepted.  If preferred, visitors can donate checks made payable to: Bay Area Crisis Nursery.”

The address is:

115 Jeffry Ranch Court, Clayton, CA  94517

UPDATED & TESTED:

I did find both of the movies on Blu-ray, but the Monsters Inc. was $19.99, not $18.99.  Also, strangely the UP movie was ringing up different prices at different registers.  I got it at the electronics counter at the $19.99 price.  So before taxes I paid $11.98, submit for (2) $5.00 rebates below and it will be $1.98 for both movies!  I also had a $5.00 money maker gift card from the glade deal, so it will cost me even less!

I just had a reader email me and tell me that the UP Movie is only $19.99 at Target, this makes for an awesome deal when you buy BOTH UP and Monsters Inc. in the same transaction.  I’m going to test this as soon as the kids are up from their nap!

Buy Up! at $19.99
Buy Monsters Inc for $18.99
Subtotal $38.98
Use $10 Up! coupon
Use $8 Monsters Inc Coupon
Use $10/2 Target coupon

Final Price: 2 DVDs for only $10.98 OOP

Then you can submit for two of these rebates:

UP: Get $5 back by mail WYB UP and (2) participating Kernel Seasons product. (Exp 2/28/10)
UP: Get $5 back by mail WYB UP and (2) Birds Eye Viola meals (exp 2/28/10)
UP: Get $4 back by mail WYB UP and 1 Ronzoni, Creamette, Ronzoni Smart Taste, Ronzoni, San Giorgio, American Beauty, Prince or Skinner pasta. (Exp 1/15/10)

(These rebates not only allow for copies of the receipt, but they also just want one of the proof of purchase tabs on the back of the DVD (it has 2) and it DOES NOT require the UPC!)

Final Price for UP and Monsters Inc. $0.98!

Final Price: $10.00 – $12.50 for 10 bags of Nestle Morsels

Recipe:

I got this VERY simple and quick recipe from Paula Dean but changed it a bit.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup crushed candy canes
  • 1 package white chocolate

Directions:

Place candy canes in a plastic bag and hammer into 1/4-inch chunks or smaller.

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler. * I don’t have a double boiler, so I just put a pyrex bowl over a pot of boiling water with a butter knife stuck in to let out the steam.*

Combine candy cane chunks with chocolate.  Pour mixture onto a cookie sheet covered with parchment or waxed paper and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until firm. Remove from cookie sheet and break into pieces (like peanut brittle.)

This was SUPER easy and easily yielded a 9X13 pan full of candy.  The kids loved pounding the candy canes and we were all surprised at how quickly it was ready to sample.  I plan to break it up and put a few pieces into separate little bags and give out to family members & friends with a Christmas card this year.  My daughter will also be selling these at our Home School Co-Op Christmas sale.

Total Cost: $2.00 per 9X13 cookie sheet of Peppermint Bark = At least 5 gifts
