Safeway Coupon Policy in action! My shopping trip & video.

Please Note: This can change at ANY time, but for now this is what their policy states.

I couldn’t wait to test out the new coupon policy.  I hadn’t been to Walgreens in quite a while, I explain why in the video but I went this morning and did the following 2 deals.  You’ll have to watch the video to see how I’m going to get an additional $15 back!  Yes I realize 1/4 of my head is cut off, my camera man aka Cody my old son is napping, ha ha.  So I was left to film on my own.

Buy (2) Biore Products – $7.49 ea
Get $5 RR
Used (2) $1/1 Coupons
Final Price: $7.98/2 or is it…?

Buy (3) John Frieda Products – $5 ea
Get $5 RR
Used (3) $3/1 from the 6/6 Sunday Paper
Final Price: $1 for all 3!

Then I went to Safeway and tested the new coupon policy.  I wasn’t prepared nearly as well I wanted to be as I had already done most of my shopping for the week.  However, I purchased everything else in the picture above for $6.39 out of pocket!  It would have been $3.25 less but I wanted to test a deal that I’d seen on other blogs.   It was the Smart Balance milk – supposedly at some retailers if you buy one a catalina coupon is printing for a free one.  Not so at Safeway, and now I have  $3.25 1/2 gallon of milk – that’s like GOLD! :)

So basically the ENTIRE shopping trip above after all coupons and RRs cost me $12.64 (take out the $3.25 milk and it’s only $9.39)

Here is the icing on the cake – we are 100% ok to Stack coupons!  What does this mean?  It means we’re going to see SO MANY MORE deals at Safeway by.com/bining manufacturer coupons AND eCoupons!

This makes me wish that I had a Safeway nearby. I have $10 in RR from Walgreen’s and haven’t seen anything in the next week’s previews that I want to keep them rolling. I’d love to be able to go to Safeway and get some “free” meat!

Do you think that a Target coupon perse will substitute in “stacking” with a Safeway coupon?

In other words, if we had a Target coupon for fruit rolls up (for instance), and a Safeway coupon for same, and a manufacturers coupon… would we be able to use all 3 on one package?

No Leslie, they will not accept another store’s coupon unless it is ALSO a manufacturer’s coupon.

You could use a Target coupon from their site with the Target logo on it, but it also has to say manufacturer coupon at the top. It cannot be a Target Web coupon.

But you COULD use the above Target Manufacturer Coupon WITH a Safeway Store Coupon. I hope that helps!

I am sooooo bummed. I went to the Clayton Safeway, armed with Safeway’s Coupon Policy and my Walgreen’s RR’s. The checker told me they wouldn’t accept it and then called the manager. The manager read through the policy and with an unwilling attitude said she would not accept the catalina no matter what. I kindly pointed out #9 and asked if she could explain to me how she interprets the policy. She couldn’t and again denied the RR from Walgreen’s.

I asked her to please take the time to look into the policies and her reply was, “I’m not doing that today. It’s Friday.” I told her I appreciate her looking into it, gave her my number, asked for a number so I could speak to someone who was familiar with the policy, and left without my groceries. =(

Julia, how do you suggest I proceed? Pretty discouraged after today’s visit to Safeway.

Wow, that’s terrible. I would contact Safeway directly, I hope you got the manager’s name. She wasn’t willing to take the time to even explain or understand the policy, that’s just not acceptable.

I would also leave a comment on their Facebook page, they are good about responding when a public comment is made.

I did leave a comment on the Facebook page and they just changed the policy & this is what they replied: “We apologize for the confusion this has caused. Our coupon policy has been clarified and updated on our official web site: we will only accept competitor Catalina coupons for a specific item. This means that we will not be accepting any competitors’ Catalina coupons that are for a dollar amount off of a future shopping trip, such as Walgreens Register Rewards. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

Thanks Julia. I just got off the phone with Safeway’s Customer Service. Their advice was to speak with the main store manager, as my encounter was with the duty manager, and to get clarification from him. She also pointed out #15 on the policy page stating: “Safeway reserves the right to refuse any coupons at its discretion.”I’m thinking I would like it to be one way or the other across the board. Hopefully I’ll get some answers when I speak to Mr. Vallis tomorrow.

Just got back from the Clayton Station Safeway. After successfully using $17 worth of Walgreens rapid rewards in Pleasant Hill Safeway on Friday, the Clayton Station Safeway manager would only take our phone number and promised to get back to us on Monday. Aparently they can’t get ahold of Catalina on the weekend. I am sure that they will have no problem once they talk to their manager.

Julia, I forgot to mention that I “accidentally” used e-coupons and paper coupons together – I forgot that the e-coupons existed – and it stacked without any problem.

Julia, I just finished talking to Eileen at Clayton Station Safeway. They at first flatly refused to take the coupons but after talking to several people, Eileen told me she would try to contact Catalina tomorrow morning to confirm that they allow Safeway to take the coupons. I reminded her that the crux of the issue is whether or not Safeway gets paid back. I also told her that I’d really rather shop at Safeway than Walgreens if I am given the choice. She was very nice. Here’s praying for a good resolution.

Julia, This e-coupon stacking thing seems to be getting a little strange. I bought Nature Valley granola nut clusters today at Safeway and after I got home I looked at the receipt and I was credited with 2 $1 off e-coupons in addition to my paper $1 off coupon. I don’t know why I had 2 e-coupons for them and they were on sale for $1.99 so it seems that it was a $1 money maker. Do you have any idea what might have happened? I’m really pleased to have gotten such a good deal.

“old” safeway in Brentwood (Central & Brentwood Blvd) A- OK w/ RR – used $14 worth tonight… the cashier wanted to hand them back to me, but I told her it was their new coupon policy… she verified with the manager? or someone… who got the book out and suggested that she read it when she had a few minutes :)

Also, they questioned my BOGO free Sobe coupons… but honored them.

So two plusses… but one minus – I didn’t get my $4 in catalinas, for buying 8 of their products tonight… oh well, can’t win them, all, after haggling the above, I didn’t dare question the missing catalinas!

What were you expecting a Catalina for?

    Leslie June 15, 2010 at 7:28 pm

The buy 8, get $4 back – I bought 6 sobe’s (used 3 BOGO free coupons) and 5 packages of Crystal light (used 3 coupons)… so even IF their register only counted 3 of the Sobe’s, that still makes 8 purchased… so I should have got a $4 catalina back… I think :)
