Wow is my Safeway overpriced! $2.34 here!
The Frugal Find via Facebook August 9, 2012 at 8:14 am
There are different varieties, some are more expensive. Did you look through them all? Maybe the cheaper ones were already sold out.
Marcie Lazarus via Facebook August 9, 2012 at 8:17 am
Nope. That was the cheapest. There were other that were more. No empty spots. I knew our prices here are more in general..this makes it pretty obvious. Makes coupons even more important!

Awesome! Worked for me. I found the kids 2pk ones on clearance for 1.87 each. I got 4 and got the $4 CAT. Thanks a bunch!

Halloween is just around the corner, maybe we should hand out toothbrushes instead of candy this year

I am about to become an ex Safeway shopper, and I spend lots of money @ their store. Tonight was the third time that I have had trouble getting legitimate coupons (printed directly from the computer after I followed the link from your blog) to scan. I had two $2.00 off coupons on two Reach toothbrushes, but they didn’t scan. Safeway’s policy is that if they don’t scan, they won’t accept them. I don’t know if the Catalina is negating the coupons, but I am pretty steamed. I could understand it if I had a manufacturer’s e coupon through Just4 you, but I didn’t on this product. The same thing happened on the computer-generated Ocean Spray (I did have an ecoupon applied, but had six boxes), and Fiber One bars coupons. At the self-checkout, the checkers don’t even bother to help out to try to figure out what is happening.
I will be calling the 800 # on Monday. Though I live closer to Safeway (on Willow Pass in Concord) than to Winco, last week I shopped there, and found many of Winco prices to be far less expensive than Safeway. Certainly not all their prices are better (I also go to Costco and Sam’s Club), but I weary of having to go to customer service when my Just4you prices don’t go through, or they don’t have an item that I supposedly get for free, or when my coupons (for whatever reason) aren’t accepted because they don’t scan.

By way of a follow up: I called the 800 #, and the rep called the store, and was told that the bar code on these coupons (from coupons.com) have an odd set of bar codes that don’t scan in their system. I checked out at the self-checkout, and I lost about $7 because my coupons didn’t work. The guy at the 800 # tried to help, but it ended up being a waste of an hour of my time. This is a new development, because I have never had a problem with these coupons until recently. Their policy is that if they don’t scan, they can’t be used. I even left a message @ coupons.com a couple of weeks ago, but no one got back to me. Anyone else experiencing this problem? It is maddening.

I used the Reach coupons from Coupons.com and they both scanned. I however didnt use the self checkout they cashier did check every coupon I used like 5. But it all was okay.

My Reach coupons wouldn’t scan but thankfully the cashier entered them manually.

This is what I posted to Safeway today…and, while it’s long, it demonstrates the lengths a customer has to go to when there is an issue. BTW, it WAS/IS a problem w/the self-serve scanners. I even wrote a letter to the CEO today. The problem is that @ the self-serve checkout, none of the workers feel compelled to help. Instead, their mantra is “If it doesn’t scan, we can’t take them.” That’s it.
Here is what I posted on FB @ Safeway.com:
“The problem that I had/have been having w/my internet coupons not scanning is due to the self-serve checkout scanners not having the necessary software. After speaking to coupons.com (coupons, inc), scanning coupons to them, speaking to the Safeway 800 # reps innumerable times, firing off emails to Safeway, and making yet another trip to Safeway to figure out the problem, it was solved. Hmm…aside from saving the company money by using your self-serve checkout, which includes bagging one’s groceries, is it incumbent on the customer to figure out the problem w/your scanners? And, why should it be that if you use the self-serve checkout, your internet coupons are rendered useless by virtue of the scanner not scanning them?” BTW, the store manager was/is terrific.

Just so you know, I wrote the CEO of Safeway, and received a call back from his office yesterday. They are trying to figure out why the coupons scanned @ the checkout, but not @ the self-checkout.
I’m really not crazy, after all! Some of my kids, though, may not agree w/that assessment.
