I think it’s time our family lives off the land for a while, by that I mean our pantry and deep freezer. They’re both full. Of what, I’m not so sure. Many odds and ends here and there, but I’d have to bet if I took the time to sort and organize a bit I’d come up with a long list of meals.
I often say that if we had to, we could live off of our stockpile for XYZ days…now I’m going to actually put that to the test! We just got back from a weekend away at the snow. We stayed in a cabin, so we purchased (and brought along) precisely what we would need for the 9 meals we’d eat there. Honestly we did eat out twice, but that was out of sheer exhaustion from hours of sledding and fun! What got me thinking though was that since where we were staying was a good 20+ minute drive to the nearest market I’d have to plan and plan well. I thought I was doing semi-ok in this area at home, but when you’re really put to the test you see how seriously you’re lacking.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m always so much more satisfied by a home cooked meal than anything we could have eaten out. Well that’s not entirely true, a good pizza sounds great every once in a while. But on the average, our home-cooked meals hit the spot. I’m not sure if its because they’re really that tasty of if I’m just happy to not have spent $40 easily on one single meal out for the family.
I’m taking on Money Saving Mom’s Eat From the Pantry Challenge.
Here are my rules:
30 Days
30 Home Cooked Dinners (breakfast & lunch too)
$30 a week
We’ll be taking advantage of the huge stock pile we have in our pantry and deep freezer, after all it’s been purchased with a purpose – to be eaten. We can’t store it forever! Before January 1st, I’ll be taking an inventory of our food and I’ll begin to make a meal plan for the month. I’ll post here each week with the meals we’ll be eating and how much we’ve spent on groceries so far.

Sounds like a great challenge, looking fwd to following you on this!
xoxo friend!
Thanks ang, oh and I never said in my rules that I couldn’t get coffee out with a friend in January. We really need to catch up.
You will do great! I have to squeeze an eating out or two in there.
I love this idea Julia. I probably don’t have as much stockpiled but I was thinking I need to do this very thing for the next couple of weeks. Good luck!! I know you will do great!!
I love the way you put it as “living off the land.” It made me laugh. I’ll have to tell my dh about it, he rolls along with all of my eating challenges, and normally gets a laugh out of it as well.
WOW… what an exciting challenge. It is so true that we all have all sort of things that we purchase and never really get use out of. I am excited to see how you do!
I think it will be a fun challenge, a learning experience, and we’ll save more money! My husband laughed too Laura, when he read the title
Good luck with the challenge!
…and love that photo!!
Love that! In fact, we’re gonna do the same….30 Home cooked dinners, lunches, and breakfasts, 30 Days, and no more than $30 per week. We’re a family of 5 right now as our daughter is home from college until mid-January. This should be interesting! Our pantry is not stocked and we just settled into our new home about 3 weeks ago, but I love a challenge! Thanks for the great idea!
Funny, I was thinking of this same thing. I have been thinking of ways that I can buckle down and REALLY save money this year. I even posted about it on my blog. I thought, well, I need to CLEAN the pantry and freezers….we NEED to eat from them and plan meals well from what we have. I mean God has blessed us with overflowing pantry shelves and freezer shelves….He wants us to be good stewards of this bounty. So, I am going to subject myself to your same challenge. I can hardly wait to see how you are doing! http://mycouponlady.com/2009/12/29/my-new-years-resolution/
Good luck with the challenge! I’m ready to dive in starting tomorrow… Happy New Year!
I can’t wait to follow you and watch your progress Julia! I am a single working mother and this is just way too much planning for my schedule but I can’t wait to see how you do.
Happy New Year!
I’m looking at this as a one month start to a New Year’s Resolution a cleaned out pantry and freezer
