99 Cents Only 1-29

Over the weekend I was discouraged by my gas & electricity bill that’s up by 136% since last month!  Even postal rates increased on the 27th.  Rising prices derail my budget.  That’s why I love the 99 Cents Only Store where I can count on stable prices on staples.  Look at what a buck can buy:

1.    Horizon Organic Heavy Cream, 1pt
2.    Nature Made Flaxseed Oil, 125ct  (Sep ’14*)
3.    Nature Made Fish Oil, 200ct !! (Oct ’13*)
4.    Jell-O No Bake Lemon Meringue Pie, 14oz
5.    Temptations, 4pk chilled
6.    Pralinutta Duo Strawberry Spread, 13oz
7.    Wilton Candy Molds, 2ct
8.    “March of the Penguins” hardcover (retail $30)
9.    “Legacies” hardcover (retail $39.95)
Best by Dates for Nature Made indicated with *
Not pictured: Oreo Triple Cookies, 13oz & Wheat Thins

Recently, Julia’s daughter Haley shared an easy recipe for Homemade Butter!  Use the organic heavy cream & you’ll have organic butter, or whipped cream, or ice cream.  The Wilton Candy Molds 2ct came in your choice of Flowers or Sports designs.  With Valentine’s Day and Easter coming up, DIY candies and candy pops are an idea using these molds.  Finally, check the Book Aisle for hardcovers to stock your Gift Closet (for unexpected guests at Christmas, perhaps).  All ages would enjoy “March of the Penguins” from National Geographic.  “Legacies” is about the collections at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.  I had the opportunity to visit that museum, and my favorite was Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz!

If anybody’s wondering…I did some research about what’s happened to fresh romaine hearts, and apparently the growers are experiencing freezing temps that make it difficult to bring us a good deal on romaine :( Also, if anybody’s wondering about the Pralinutta Duo Strawberry Spread, 13oz. My kids adore this spread on toast, bagels, waffles. It is made in Belgium. The texture and container is similar to the pricier Nutella.

I was gonna ask about the spread :) I think tomorrow Im making a trip over. Iris those freezing temps we have all experienced lately that have those bills jumping. We don’t heat our house above 65 and we had a big increase in our bill too :( thanks Jolene!

Once again, Jolene can read my mind! I wondered about that strawberry spread…Hey, if the Belgians can make delicious cholocate & waffles, I guess they can make magic with strawberry too. Thanx again Jolene…..I’m gonna buy some when I go there.

And oh 1 more thing….my PG&E bill is astronomical this month. It was $516!!! Normally, it’s around $250-$300/mo. for our house. Now you know why I have to go to the dollar store :-)

Oh and 1 more thing….No kidding about the heating bill…..My PG&E bill is astronomical this month. It was $516!! Normally, it’s around $250-$300/mo for our house. Maybe it’s time to relook at solar (although the rebates are not as good anymore I hear).

The taste reminds me of strawberries & cream. You’ll see it is white/pink swirled. In Baking Aisle. The Oreos Triple Double Neapolitan Cookies look dangerous! Like a Big Mac, it’s 3 cookies sandwiched with 2 creme layers…I gained 5 pounds just looking at it! You’ll thank me for not photographing it!

I just want to point out to those in the North Bay that a 99 cent store opened this week in Rohnert Park. My husband and I just happened to go to Target and our mouths dropped with excitement when we saw the signs! We happily welcome a 99 cent store up here and I will be paying special attention to your weekly trips Jolene.

      Shannon,
Welcome! Oooh, lucky you to have both a Target & 99 Cents Only next to each other. I’m addicted to bargain-hunting at both!

It’s a long drive to Salinas store so I spent over 1 hour there. They had Temptations in 4 flavors, Pacific spring mix, Nice red potatoes (5 lb) and a lot of good produce, Silk fruit/protein quart, Newtons Fruit Thins, PB/Chocolate Ritz Crackerfuls, Healthy Choice soups, flavored BF/Kraft mayos, Stride gum Sparkle Kinetic Berry 3 pk, 3 temporary racks of clothes, L’eggs energy-type tights, massaging socks and more, very little left of NatureMade (krill oil and one other) . Wish I had a 99c store nearby – especially with the crazy rising prices elsewhere. So many items in supermarket have jumped up $.50–1.00, not just 25c or less. Safeway frozen veg. bags have gone from 16 oz. to 12 oz., for example, while average price is up.

      Jana,
We appreciate hearing your Salinas store finds! Glad the long drive to shop there was worth it! When I heard “long drive”, it reminds me of this handy tip …

Tip: I keep a small cooler in my trunk because I NEVER KNOW what goodies I’ll stumble across @ 99 Cents Store. If necessary, I’ll purchase the 12oz can of Frozen Juice Concentrate simply to throw into my cooler to keep my finds nice & cool :) Sort of like using it as an Ice Pack!
