I had no idea it was this simple. It’s so simple my 11 year old bought the ingredients with her own money and 10 minutes after getting home she had a piece of toast with freshly melted butter on top. It was delicious. So here’s what you need to do courtesy of 11 year old Chef Haley…
Ingredients:
- 1 container of heavy cream
- 1 mason jar
Directions:
Fill the mason jar up 1/2 way leaving room to “shake”. Then start shaking vigorously until it becomes solid. You may need to strain off the excess liquid (the buttermilk). That’s it you have delicious butter! If you prefer salted butter, just add a 1/4 teaspoon for every 2 cups of heavy cream.
If you’d rather not get a workout in the kitchen, the just pour the ingredients into a blender, mixer, or food processor. Let it run for a good 10 minutes until it’s firm, then again you’ll just need to strain the buttermilk.
Now if you’d like to kick it up a notch you could add a few ingredients to the butter…
- Stir in some honey and you’ve got honey butter!
- Mix in some fresh garlic and parsley for garlic bread
- Lemon (delicious on fish)
- Cinnamon & Sugar
This isn’t so much about saving money since heavy cream isn’t exactly cheap but I do believe it tastes better and it’s all natural, fresh, and can be made organic with organic heavy cream. Plus you have the added bonus of mixing in your own flavors and making just the right amount needed for a recipe.

Thanks to my daughter Haley for sharing this recipe with me! She learned it at school during their “Colonial Days” study.

Thanks Haley! For tiny hands, a clean baby food jar fits perfectly in a child’s grip, too. The magic also happens quicker in case of short attention span

So cute, I forget about the tiny hands and short attention spans now that my youngest is 5 – wow times does go by fast!

I always look forward to your comments Jolene (aside from your 99 cents posts). You always think outside the box and I love learning from you. Thanx for the great idea!

Thanks, Sue for the sweet comment! Credit for baby food jar goes to a 1st Grade Teacher who does butter churning w/ a whole roomful of her 6 year olds! Shake shake shake!

This is a tradition in my husband’s family. They make butter every Thanksgiving this way!

Thanks Haley: I see a new cooking show on the food network hosted by none other than Haley maybe the title of the show will be Miss Haley’s frugal fun.

Anyone tried it with whipping cream rather than heavy cream? I often have extra and this would be a great way to use it up.
