Grocery Outlet Extreme Savings 2-19

Grocery Outlet is known for their bargains but have you stumbled across their extreme bargains before?  I’ve described Grocery Outlet as a treasure hunt and today’s loot was plentiful!  Of course, sales and stock vary from store to store but if you live near a Grocery Outlet I’d highly suggest you add them to your grocery shopping routine.  Now for those of you that are in Bend – RUN to Grocery Outlet and grab these same deals before they’re gone!

Grocery Outlet Extreme Savings 2 2-19

So obviously the pictures speak for themselves, there are always amazing deals to be had.  Of course you need to check the expiration dates, especially when it comes to these extreme deals and then decide for yourself whether it’s worth buying or possibly even stocking up on.  For example the Kashi cereal above doesn’t expire until 3/24/13 and our kid’s go through a box a day easily – at just $0.20 a box you can bet that I stocked up!

You can go here to find a Grocery Outlet near you and to see their most recent ad.  Also you may enjoy this video where I interviewed the Grocery Outlet staff at the headquarters in Berkeley, CA a few years ago.

Now for fun, Grocery Outlet has given me TWO $25 gift cards to give away to TWO Frugal Find readers!

My best tip is (as others have commented): check out every aisle. Look for items that you normally buy. Avoid stockpiling items that no one in your family will eat (I’ve learned this from experience!) — it’s not a good deal if it just sits on your pantry shelf or worse, goes bad in the fridge!

I was able to find some Eukenoba canned cat food for 3/$1. It is a pretty good price for the brand and the dates were all good.

I got some of that too. My cats only have canned for when i feel like giving them something special. But I got 12 cans of that stuff. Can’t beat that price, heck, cheaper than 9 lives canned!

My tip is that you have to really pay attention as you go down the isles. Some of the best deals at just sitting there quietly on the shelf–no big signs. Also, if you find something at a good price, buy a lot of it. The deal will not last!

Expiration dates are always a thing to take into consideration at any store. I have found several expired products at big chains as well. You have to decide what you are comfortable with. I don’t care if a box of cookies is a little expired, but I do care about dairy and meats. I also will freeze some perishables that are close to their expiration date.

I get a lot of the cheese I consume from Grocery Outlet. Great prices and a really great variety. Wine too. Nearly always get my wine there!!! Lots of pretty decent ones for under $5!!!

My tip…take your time. Go up and down each isle, even if you don’t have something on your list. I have found really amazing cat food there a year or so back, even though mine are on a pretty strict diet. But for something similar at a great price, I just mixed the regular kind in with other. Kitties (and their digestion) never knew the difference. And I probably saved about $30. Recently found a great deal on some olive oil, I am fully stocked, but couldn’t pass up the price.

Expiration dates….it really depends. If it’s crackers, chips, something frozen, I’m ok if it’s a bit over date. Dairy and meats, no thanks. I will get stuff discounted that is near it’s expiration date, but use it super fast. Yogurt is an exception though. I will eat that a little over date, if it looks and smells fine, of course :)

My tip is to visit your GO at least once per week, before going to others supermarkets and to go down every aisle slowly so to make sure not to miss out on any deals hiding, also a lot of the deals aren’t in the ad! So go in and have a look.
Oh and ask the store employee when the shipments come in so you know when to go in to look for new items!

It really depends on the look of the product what it is for example something expiring that day or next I’d really think as if I’d be using it right away sure why not get it for a great deal! Frozen things I sometimes have at home for far too long in the deep freezer so I’m okay with frozen products being expired as long as its not freezer burnt.

The best tip I would give about bargain hunting at GO is to be patient, and go often!

I think that expiration dates only matter on certain foods – dairy, meat… but that other types of foods can go a bit past the expiration date.

I go for the great cheese deals. All kinds of cheeses, they are so cheap that I get to try new ones with no regrets.

I discovered that our local food bank accepts food up to one year past their expiration dates. So I’m not too worried about being close to an expired date.
