I have decided to declare the month of June a Financial Fasting month.
If you have ever fasted from food, you will know what it means to look in your pantry and see all the not so appealing box foods that have been sitting there for months take on a new life. You’d notice the hundreds of meal ideas you could create, when just the week before there was never anything to eat in the house. You would surprise yourself when the things you “hated” to eat for some reason won’t stop tempting you with their delicious appeal.
I think this is how spending money can b.com/e. Just as there isn’t anything wrong with eating, there isn’t anything wrong with spending money. The problem lies when you becomeconsumed by the need to eat/spend. Something I now try to live by when it comes to eating is this saying ”Eat to live, don’t live to eat.” In reality spending could be and should be looked at the same way. ”Spend to live, don’t live to spend.” It’s very easy with all the deals out there to becomeconsumed by the need or desire to get out there and SHOP!
I imagine that this will be a very enlightening month. I am thrilled to be challenged and reminded about how truly blessed we actually are and to remember how little we really need to live and be happy.
So for the month of June I am going on a spending fast. I will not be giving up spending altogether, because the reality is that we have 4 kids that need to eat, diapers that need to be purchased, etc. However, we are pretty well stocked up on the essentials so I may even surprise myself.
My rules for June:
- I have $250 to spend on groceries & toiletries.
- I have $5.00 to spend on the Summer Movies – Beat the Heat deal from Cinemark.
- There will be NO eating out, at all – unless we already have a giftcard to do so with (a date night is in the works).
- I will not purchase anything extra for my “stockpile” unless it is FREE.
- All of our other bills will be paid as normal.
Will you join me on the challenge? Your month will undoubtedly look differently from mine, but the challenge is to live by the motto ”Spend to live, don’t live to spend”.
Feel free tocomment and let me know you’re going to take on the challenge! I’d love to hear your stories and how you plan to challenge yourself during this month of June.
