Don’t buy stuff you cannot afford.

.

We’re taking the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University at our church this Fall and we are really enjoying it!  We already had most of the tips and ways of living under our belts and have been working out way out of debt for some time now.  However we were NOT gazelle intense, we were simply wandering our way out.  Now we are GETTING OUT OF DEBT!

I’ve written in the past about the Envelope System and I plan to go into more detail in another post soon.  Using cash ONLY will revolutionize your financial life.  Guaranteed.

I thought you’d find the video above hilariously funny.

Hey Julia,
I love this video, so true and so funny! Where is your post about the envelope system? I tried to search on your site and I can’t find it. I would love to read it!

Sarah, for some reason those posts aren’t showing up. However I’ve re-written the post about the Envelope Budget System and it is scheduled for Monday.

I think for most of us it goes like this….We want to do better. But we live paycheck to paycheck (because we fail to make our money behavior with a written budget or give up when our budget does not work the first month), then an emergency comes along (we fail to know what truly constitutes an emergency) and we whip out the CC, feeling defeated we keep using the CC even though the emergency has passed.
For us personally the hardest part has been prioritizing and understanding that until we are out of debt we do not have any “extra money”. We have lived a certain way for so long. And now, in order to rid ourselves of debt, our life will have to look different. Other people will notice that we are doing things different. And many will be upset by our choices.
But we are dedicated to it this time. We will pray our way through ridding our debt.

Adriane, that was very well written. I think the key is that we don’t know what truly constitutes and emergency, and hopefully by then we’ll all have our $1000 in savings.

Thanks. Can you tell we are really thinking this though this time around? Oh yeah I forgot the part where we trash our saving with things that aren’t emergencies. Which is why we have to turn to the CC to begin with. We live in such a privileged society that it is very hard to see that not having a gift for a party or being to tried to cook does not make an emergency.

haha, love it Adriane. I know you’ve taken the class, but maybe a refresher would give you the kick in the pants you need.

I have found that listening to his show really helps too. Kinda hard to go out and make bad choices when you just listened to Dave tell you to live within your means. LOL His show really gives you a look into what a great guy he is. The way he handles calls is amazing. He always know just what to say.

Love this SNL skit. We just finished up FPU at our church and are going to take the next few months to go through each step until we “get it”. Ordered the Jr. version for our kids too! Thanks Julia. Love all your deals along with your words of wisdom!

I LOVE Dave Ramsey. I’ve been listening to him for about 5 years now via satellite radio. My friend took the class at her church and I went with her to a class last month. I love hearing about how motivated people get, and their accomplishments.

And yes, I do use the envelope system. Funny because I’m actually writing a blog post about it also because my fam and friends keep asking me about it.
