DIY: Valentine’s Day Heart Crayons

http://thefrugalfind.com/ The following is a guest post from Cam at NoThankYouPlease who is gracefully enduring bed-rest with her second child. With the help of her mom and her 3 year old daughter they created this adorable, frugal, and simple Valentines Day gift idea. If you have little ones, you’re going to love this. If you’d like to submit a guest post, you can read more about what we offer in exchange and what we’re looking for over here.

Pinterest has left me wanting to do so many fun projects. I’ve been trying to think of a cute project to give the kids at pre-school for Valentine’s Day. Candy is not an option and I needed something that was gender neutral. I was really excited to see the perfect project, Crayon Hearts! I have to say, this was by far the easiest project that we could have done. I love that Em got to do about 90% of the work for this project. I just had to supervise and get them in and out of the oven. If you want a fun and creative project, try making these crayons. You just need a couple items to have a great gift! Here’s what you need: Crayons and your favorite mold. Preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Break up your crayons into random pieces. I sorted by color first, then put them into the molds by color groups. Fill each mold about 1/2 way full. You could even add a little glitter to make them shine. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until the crayons have fully melted. Wait until the crayons have cooled before removing them from the molds. How easy is this? I love this project, you can do it for any occasion too. The best part, there is no mess and very little clean up!

How did you package these? Cellophane or plastic bags?

I’ve been meaning to do this after I noticed how many little pieces of crayons my daughter has. I Googled ideas and a project like this showed up. It’s great since little kids tend to have a bunch of crayons and my daughter uses them so much we have plenty of small pieces. I just couldn’t find any cute molds last time I went to the Dollar Tree.

Where could I find cheap and cute molds? I have none at home, but would love to try this out.

We made these for party favors last year (little ducks, flowers and bunnies) and packaged them in cellophane bags with Easter grass at the bottom. I just picked up the heart molds a few hours ago for Valentine favors! Super easy! Michaels and Hobby Lobby have $1 boxes of 64 crayons (off brand). That’s what I have used. I also saw them at 99 cents only today in 64 packs. Great non-sugar favor, kids love them and really inexpensive!!

I got my molds at Target, the dollar and up section in the front.

I found small heart shaped ice cube trays in the dollar section at Target (although they were $2.50). I was afraid to put them in the oven, but they worked beautifully in the microwave!

Crystal if you can’t find the ones at Target, grab the 40% off one item coupon for Michael’s. You can use that plus get the Wiltons molds on sale after the holidays!

I have that same mold and have used it to make crayons many times! Most recently though, we used it to make heart-shaped soaps.

Thank you for the great idea of what to do with all those small pieces of crayons I have in my classroom! I am going to do this project with my kindergartners next week.

If you have a lot of crayons (which we had) including the ones from restaurant, just note that “low quality” crayons will leave one side of your melted creations with a wax that doesn’t color. Basically it melts but leaves all the refined gunk at the top (or bottom, can’t remember which now). Still a fun thing to do with the kids though.
