(Open Again!) MySurvey is accepting new applicants – Get paid for taking surveys!

My Survey is one of the most popular survey companies here on TFF and they have openings once again, head on over here to get signed up.

Tell businesses about the products YOU want and earn rewards for taking surveys. MySurvey is a group of consumers from throughout the United States who influence future products and services by volunteering to participate in consumer research. By sharing your opinions about products and services, you are rewarded with Reward Points to redeem for cash and merchandise.

You earn 15 to 35 points per pre-screening surveys (so no wasted time on surveys you don’t qualify for!) and up to 1,000 points for full surveys.   The exchange rate is 1,000 points = $10 cash.  So with just one survey you can earn $10!  They payout at $10 and checks arrive within 4 weeks of requesting them.

Current TFF Readers/MySurvey Member’s Experience:

I’ve only been with them for a few months and made over 150.00 in gift cards…..by far one of my absolute fave sites! – Nikki

$50 in Amazon Gift cards in four months :) My Christmas budget LOVES MySurvey! – Carissa

I’ve been doing surveys for this company for about 1 1/2 years. It doesn’t pay out an incredible amount, but the surveys generally are no longer than 20 minutes, and even if you screen out you get some credit. This year I’ve made $40–which I’ve gotten in Amazon gift cards. I’ve sampled shampoo, dishwasher soap (a 3-month supply), and mayonnaise. So I think for the effort I’ve put in, it pays reasonably well. I would recommend it. – Mary

I love MySurvey! I’ve been with them since May of this year and have already cashed in enough points for $60! I’m less than 100 points (less than 1 survey usually!) away from another $15! I average about $15 a month through them, and it doesn’t take much more than a couple hours a month to complete the surveys! I think getting the gift cards is probably a better way to spend the points, but I hate getting locked into one store…I prefer the cash! (Between MySurvey and Swagbucks, I’ve cashed in close to $150 since May!) – Hillary

Let’s talk Facebook Swap/Sell Groups – are you a part of one?

Facebook Swap Groups

A few months ago I discovered my local town had a Facebook Swap group (several in fact) – you can buy, sell, or swap items from around your home with other local families.  First off you’ll have to find the group – many of them are private.  So ask your friends in real life or on Facebook if they’re a part of a group and then ask for an invitation.  They’re kept private to avoid scammers and the like.

Then start looking around your house for items you’re just not using, trust me it will add up!  Even just a couple of dollars here and there.  We use the Envelope Budget System so it seemed natural to just start a little envelope for my earnings, in no time I had well over $100 in there.  I don’t miss a thing I’ve sold either.  Then if I find something on the swap I want to buy, I take the money from that same envelope. These groups have helped our budget BIG time!

Here are a few examples of things I’ve sold recently:

  1. Outgrown kid’s clothes
  2. Dish set that was collecting dust in the garage
  3. Knick-Knacks and Decorations that aren’t my style anymore
  4. Shoes, Coats, Purses
  5. Bikes, Office Chair, Desk, Etc

This is how most groups work:

  1. Take a picture and give a short description, then post it to the swap group.
  2. List your asking price and whether or not you’ll accept offers for trade or lower prices
  3. Buyers will let you know if they’re interested by commenting on the photo or asking questions, in most cases the first person to comment is “first in line” and it goes from there.
  4. Arrange to meet for the sale, if you’re selling the item it’s common courtesy that they buyer will come to you.  However in some cases you may live outside of town like we do, so often I’ll agree to meet at a local store when I have plans to be out that way.  If you don’t feel comfortable meeting at your home,  public places are a safe option.

I’d love to hear your experiences – have you sold/bought off a Facebook swap group?  I have several items listed for sale on mine currently which just means more money in our pockets and less clutter around the house!

In my personal opinion these groups far outweigh the benefits of buying/selling on Craigslist.  For one – you have some knowledge of who you’re buying/selling with.  There is some sort of accountability since their name/photo is clearly listed in the swap group.  I have had far fewer “flakes” with these groups.

In addition to cash rewards, most surveys offer rewards that range from 375 to 750 points. You also get 25 points for any survey you don’t qualify for.

The reward points can be exchanged anytime by selecting from a huge variety of prizes. All you need to do is provide a few details about yourself (it takes just a couple minutes) and periodically you’ll be asked to answer a questionnaire that will be sent to your email account. For each questionnaire that you participate in, you will earn points good towards a large selection of rewards. The more surveys you participate in, the more points you’ll earn!

How to Make Money with eBay — Finding Inventory

This series is brought to you by Kimberly from Homemaking Expert. Kimberly is a stay-at-home mom who uses eBay to supplement her family’s income while her husband finishes college. She writes at Homemaking Expert about cleaning, cooking, budgeting and all other things related to making a house a home.

We are going to talk in this post about where to find inventory to resell on eBay. Like I mentioned in both previous posts, the best place to start is in your own home. Look for stuff that you’ve been thinking of getting rid of and get them listed! There is no risk since you already own them. You can check out a list of personal items that I’ve successfully sold in the “What to Sell” post from yesterday. Other than your own home here are places to look:

1. Thrift Stores

I probably get 80% of my resell items at local thrift stores. I check first the “collectibles” area or the cases where they keep the more expensive items and then scour the store for vintage finds or other things that have a good selling record on eBay.

Make sure to find out the sale dates and details of your local thrift store. For example, Savers has a specific color tag each week that is 50% off and the following Monday that color is $.99! Most thrift stores have similar sales to move inventory off their shelves. It’s a great way to keep your overhead low!

2. Garage Sales

Garage sales are one of the best places to find inventory. It takes a bit more time because you are driving around different sales as opposed to thrift stores that have tons of inventory in one place. However, items at garage sales are generally in better condition.

Most of the toys that I sell come from garage sales. They are typically complete and well taken care of. And garage sales typically offer prices even lower than thrift stores.

My usual garage sale day is Saturday. The night before I take 10-15 minutes to look through Craigslist and local classifieds to make a plan for the next morning. Having a plan saves much time and gas and I’m able to get out there early, find good stuff and get home in a decent amount of time.

3. Friends & Family

I recently cleaned out my mother’s landlord’s garage and in return she let me take all of her unwanted items to go through before I donated them. Out of the car load of boxes I was able to resell about a dozen things, one of which has been my best sell yet – an Hermes scarf that ended up selling for close to $250!

4. Outlet Malls

If you live near outlet malls, this is a great place to find resell items. I lived in Las Vegas for several years and would occasionally look at outlet malls for clearanced items. An example of this is I purchased an umbrella at a Burberry outlet for less than $10 and was able to resell it for close to $80 on eBay.

These are the four places that I most commonly find eBay items. So, now you know what to do to get started, have a general idea of what to sell and where to find it. Tomorrow we get into the important topic of listing your items for resell! And then you are well on your way to earning extra money.

How to Make Money with eBay: What to Sell

This series is brought to you by Kimberly from Homemaking Expert. Kimberly is a stay-at-home mom who uses eBay to supplement her family’s income while her husband finishes college. She writes at Homemaking Expert about cleaning, cooking, budgeting and all other things related to making a house a home.

If you want to sell stuff on eBay, it’d be really helpful to know what to sell, right? Well, technically, you can sell pretty much anything – as long as it is legal, that is. I’ve personally seen someone selling a date with himself, so I do mean anything!

But what SHOULD you sell? As far as stuff around your house that you no longer want – anything goes. You have nothing to lose since it’s stuff you already own and had planned to get rid of anyway. Some things that I once owned that have sold successfully on eBay are:

  • My son’s toys
  • Jewelry
  • My husband’s music equipment
  • Camping and outdoor items
  • Military apparel and gear
  • DVDs
  • Books (sell best in lots)

However, when it comes to items that you are going to purchase just to resell, you need to do a bit of research and be more choosy, since these items will (most likely) be costing you money.

Here is my biggest tip for knowing what to sell on eBay – research items that have already sold on eBay! There are two ways to do this. One, using the eBay smart phone app.

Dowload the app and select “search” on the bottom toolbar. Then type in a description for the search. You will want to use these steps for  a few different descriptions for your item. For example, “Vintage Cabbage Patch Doll” will return different results than “Vtg CPK Doll” since the search bar searches only the title.  The default search will show listings with the amount in blue. These are items that are currently listed and have not sold.

This is the most important step – click “Refine” in the top right corner. Scroll down to select “Completed Listings” and then click the Search button in the top left corner.

What you are now seeing are items whose auctions have ended in the last 30 days. The items with dollar amounts in red didn’t sell and the green dollar amounts did sell.

How to Make Money on eBay

With this tool, you get a great indication of whether or not the item you are looking at is a good investment. So, let’s say that I found a baggie of about 8 Thomas the Train pieces at a thrift store for $1.99 (which has happened). I can tell from the past 30 days, that I can potentially resell them for $15. Then I can decide if that is a desirable profit margin. Like I said, GREAT TOOL for research!

You can do the same thing on their website by choosing the “completed listings” option on the left hand column after you’ve searched. You just don’t have the convenience of being able to look up the item at the store before purchasing it.

Just because something hasn’t sold on eBay in the last 30 days doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t sell. But researching and purchasing what has a successful sales record is just a great way to take a bit of risk out of the investment.ake Money on eBay

There are some categories of items that I have consistent success in selling. They are:

  • Vintage toys
  • Popular current kid’s toys (Legos, Thomas the Train, Little People)
  • Name Brand Purses, Scarves and Accessories (Chanel, Gucci, and other high end brands)
  • Lots of children’s books
  • Music and sound equipment
  • Scrapbook and craft items

Those are the things that I look for and that have sold well for me in the past. You may find you have success with other stuff, but that is what works for me. Most importantly, do your research! Make sure to check out the posts below for more information.
