Budget Pantry Staples

It looks like August is going to be a VERY tight month for us financially, with my husband’s last day at work being July 31st.  I am so thankful for my coupon passion, because of it, my pantry is pretty well stocked and my toiletry closet is bursting at the hinges.  I went through our freezer this morning and started tocompile a list of meals I could cook just from what I currently have.  I was surprised!  It’s amazing how often I open the fridge or freezer, see it packed full, and yet still “there is nothing to eat” goes through my head.   I wanted tocompile a list of Budget Pantry Staples that if I don’t already have I need to buy to get us through August.

This is what I came up with:

Rice – The most versatile ingredient in my opinion.

Pasta – The base for MANY meals!  Often times Whole Grain pasta is actually the same price if not cheaper than it’s white counterpart.

Potatoes – More starch, yes, but if you have to cut back this will surely stretch your budget.

Garlic & Olive Oil – While I know they are not filling in and of themselves, they will definetly add flavor to many of your meal creations.

Canned Veggies – They are packed at their prime, however if you have 99 Cent Store nearby,  fresh fruit and veggies are very affordable there.

Oatmeal - A very good breakfast staple, if you’re not already stocked up on Cereal with all of the recent deals!

Beans – Beans of all varieties can make several different dishes, from mexican to the All American 12 Bean Soup.

Frozen Fruit – A great way to get fruit in your diet, you can either serve as is (not my favorite) or you can blend with a little bit of plain yogurt for a delicious and nutritious smoothie.

***Maybe you can help me with this as I prepare my meals for the next month.***

What are some staples in your pantry?  What are some tried and true tips to stretching your food budget?  What are some of your best “eating on a budget” tips?  You can either reply in thecomments section or post a link to a blog of your own sharing some tips you’d like to share.  I look forward to reading them all!
