AnyLeaf Review and Giveaway: (2) $50 Safeway Giftcards!

by Julia on June 28, 2010
Giveaway

This is something to sit down for…ok are you ready?

Anyleaf is a Bay Area start-up company whose goal is to help you find the BEST price on any given item at your local grocery store at any given time.  The creation of this idea has a funny back story, the 3 men who started AnyLeaf are bachelors who live together and were planning their next grocery trip.  They’re on a budget and couldn’t figure out which store had the lowest prices that week, so AnyLeaf was born.  I met with Jeff, Josh, and Jason last week for lunch and left just giddy to share this company with you all!

We’ve all been in that situation, probably on a weekly basis.  You need to buy something (with or without a coupon) but you just don’t know where the best price is that week. Problem solved.  Rather than getting out all of our sales ads, AnyLeaf iscompiling all of that data for us.  As of right now AnyLeaf has information on Safeway, Lucky, Raley’s / Nob Hill, Whole Foods, and Sprouts. There are 2 major benefits as I see it to AnyLeaf…

1. I need to buy chicken this week, I don’t have a coupon – where is the best price?  OR I have a coupon for Minute Maid Orange Juice, I don’t know which store has the lowest price, where should I go?

2. I can now see the sales history on any given item at my local stores.  This helps me to know if what Safeway has advertised as a “sale” price this week is really truly a good price.  Here is an example of Rib Eye Steak…

AnyLeaf is new and needs your feedback!

As a thank you for your feedback in thecomment section below, AnyLeaf would like to give (2) Frugal Find readers each a $50 Safeway gift card.  Take a few minutes and test drive the AnyLeaf site, then come back and enter the giveaway!

I will be announcing these giveaways in advance on Facebook and Twitter – be sure to follow me so you don’t miss a thing!

Enter to win:

1.  Comment as many times as you’d like – eachcomment is an entry!
2.  Keep thecomments on track, by discussing the following questions…
3.  BONUS $5 Gift Card to the store of your choice if you can show that you tweeted this giveaway or shared it on your Facebook wall!

  • Other than the stores listed above, which stores would you like to see AnyLeaf cover?
  • What additional features would you like to see?
  • Can you imagine yourself using AnyLeaf on a regular basis?
  • If not, what would you like to see so that AnyLeaf would be useful to you?

This giveaway will end at 9pm PST on 7/2/10!

As an additional way to give feedback to AnyLeaf…they are currently crafting a list of Panel Member for a short 15-20 minute user test study.  They’d like to compensate your for your time with a $10 Safeway gift card.  Space is limited, so if you’re interested Contact Me with your Name, Phone Number, and Email Address.  You must be able to meet in Concord for this Panel Member session.

Disclaimer: All opinions are 100% my own, I was treated to lunch at the delicious Panera in Concord and compensated with a Safeway giftcard for my consultation time and for sharing AnyLeaf with you in this post.  The Safeway gift cards are courtesy of AnyLeaf.  You can read my Disclosure Policy, for additional information.

This is a great service. Will definitely use this. Adding Grocery Outlet and Trader Joes would be a real winner.

Interesting concept but I don’t see enough of my usual haunts or products for it to be useful

Andrea,

What products were you unable to find? We may be able to add them.

I’d like to see Target on the list as well!

This is a great idea! It was easy to use, but since Im from Chicago… Of course would love that you add our area to your searchable areas. I would like to see Jewel (Albertsons chain), Walgreens, CVS, Aldis, Costco, Target, and Walmart prices be added. I test drove Anyleaf from my iPhone and it was friendly to use.

Hope you make Chicago one of your locations and I love Safeway (Dominicks here) gift card!

I like the concept. I would like to be able to sort the best deals by store, as well. Say I want the cheapest boneless, skinless chicken breast and find it’s on sale for the best price at Raley’s (Nob Hill) this week, I would like to click on the store and find ALL the best prices they have for Raley’s sales that week (since I will be making a trip to that particular store already).

Hi Faye,

Being able to see just the best deals on a store by store basis is a good idea! We’ll add it to our todo list.

Cheers!

I think it is a great idea, but since I am in Southern CA, I can’t use it right now. :(

The idea is great and might be very helpful!

Do we assume that the price listed is the lowest anywhere? It might be interesting to see the information in a chart with all the stores down one side and the items across the other so we can compare the stores. If it’s just a few cents difference we may be able to pick out which store has the most thngs we need and see if the other items are worth another trip.

Reply

Jason July 2, 2010 at 11:57 am

Hi Diane,

The items featured on the home page will be showing the lowest price we know about. The Favorites page shows all the prices (sorted lowest to highest) for a particular item. We’ll look into making this more clear.

The easiest way to see the absolute lowest price on a particular item, is to go to that item’s page. You can do this by clicking on the name of a specific item, such as “Broccoli Crowns”. On the item page, we show exactly which store has the lowest price on that item. We also show any other stores where the item is currently on sale.

We’re actively working to make it more clear how good a particular price is. E.g. is it just the usual sale price, or is it the lowest price we’ve ever seen?

Thanks for feedback!

I didn’t see the item price history on the site. That would really be a big help!

Reply

having trader Joe’s to help compare with the other stores would be great too.

Reply

Natalie P. July 2, 2010 at 10:15 am

I didn’t see anything on the history of prices… but what a great way to start finding the best price and being able to know when to stock up!

Reply

Jason July 2, 2010 at 11:24 am

Hi Natalie,

We’ve only been gathering prices for a little over a month, so only a subset of our items have pricing history. When looking at Sunnyvale stores, I’m seeing pricing history for the Rancher’s Reserve New York Strip Steak at Safeway. http://www.anyleaf.com/price/ranchers-reserve-new-york-strip-steak

If you could let me know your location (either in a comment here or send us an e-mail), I can take a look at the stores near you to make sure there isn’t a problem on our end.

Thanks for checking out the site!

for me, having Safeway, Lucky (Savemart), and Raley’s listed is huge- those are my fav stores to compare shop each week, and this will save me some time!

I could definitely seeing this work for an iPhone app. As a website I’m not as inspired at first glance. Pretty pictures of the products might help (even just icons?). Flyers are a pain to look through but at least I get some pictures. Just first impression…

Reply

Jeff July 2, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Hi Laurie,

We’re going to take a look at making an iPhone app so you can quickly check prices as you shop. You’re absolutely right about pictures, too. That’s one of the next items on our to-do list.

Thanks for checking out the site.

This concept is really awesome. As a mom of an 8 month old, I have to have my shopping trips super planned and organized. This would help me to do so! Unfortunatly, there’s no search engine for my area (Houston, TX), but all things in time!

Carolsue July 2, 2010 at 4:28 pm

This is a great idea because you can match you coupons up to the best sales and save lots of $$$. I have already used it before my recent trip to Safeway! Thanks!

Reply

Laura July 2, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Seems that there is history on certains products only? When this comes out of the beta version, I guess the history will start to get created for the many products already listed?

Reply

Jason July 2, 2010 at 8:13 pm

Hi Laura,

We’ve only been gathering sale prices for a little over a month. When you see an item with no price history, that means this is the first time we’ve seen it on sale. As we continue collecting sale prices in the coming months, you’ll start to see history for more and more items.

Down the road, when you see an item on sale that doesn’t have much history, you’ll know that item doesn’t go on sale very often. That means it would be a great time to stock up!

Cheers!

Jeff July 2, 2010 at 10:02 pm

Hi Laura,

We’ve only been collecting data for about 6 weeks, so we only have history for items that have been on sale multiple times in the past 6 weeks. As we collect a larger and larger body of data, we’ll have historical prices for more products.

I’d like to see really local stores such as Berkeley Bowl and Farmer Joe’s to compare produce prices.

Reply

Jeff July 2, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Hi Helen,

We’d love to include prices from local stores. Getting data from them is a challenge, but it’s something we’ll investigate more going forward.

This site is awesome! I was going to spend part of today looking for all of the sale ads, but I just did a search of my favorite items that I need instead.

Honestly, I can’t remember the name of the company when I want to look something up. I had to come to Julia’s site and scroll down until I found this post. I know it’s probably too late to change the name, but thought I’d mention it. Does anyone else have this problem? I know I can bookmark it, but I wish the name represented what the website does…

Ok, I’m going to check on Anyleaf where avocados are on sale, so I can use those coupons Julia told us about!

Very very neat idea. I did some search and it does show the correct prices. The only thing I’d like is SaveMart deals, too :) I thought Lucy and Save Mart and the same, but choosing Lucky as a search option does not change anything.
